Addressing Australia’s Labour Shortages

This visa allows employers to address labour shortages with talent from around the globe, without shifting their priority from local Australian workers. The visa offers pathways to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa.

The Skills in Demand visa is structured into three streams:

  • Specialist Skills: This stream is for highly skilled workers whose occupations fall within ANZSCO major groups 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6.
  • Core Skills: This stream is for skilled workers whose occupations are listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
  • Essential Skills: This stream is for skilled workers whose occupations fall under lower-paid essential workers, like in aged care, disability, and other critical sectors.

Please note that according to 482 visa Australia requirements, there is no age restriction/limit for this visa. So anyone with higher skills can apply for a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa in Australia i.e Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Reservoir.

  • Check if your occupation is on the relevant Skilled Occupation List.

  • Find an employer who is willing to sponsor you. Your employer should be willing to complete the employer sponsorship application online through the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
  • Once you find an employer, you will need to have them nominate you for the skills in demand visa.
  • Once the employer nomination application is submitted, you can apply for the visa online.
  • Wait for the decision. It can take several months for the DHA to decide on your visa application.
  • Once your application is approved, you will receive your visa and can start working in Australia.

Visa Extension

Once your Skills in Demand visa is due to expire, you may be eligible to renew it. The renewal rights and pathways to permanent residency are based on the stream you’re in and whether your occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).

Workers in eligible occupations under the Core Skills Pathway may renew their visa and potentially transition to permanent residency. Renewal limits and conditions may vary based on the latest immigration settings and employer needs.

Inclusion of Family Members

Spouses/Partners and children can be included in a skills in demand visa application as dependent family members. These family members have unrestricted work and study rights or transition to permanent residency.

Key Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility Requirements to Apply for Skills in Demand Visa (482 Visa Conditions)

Employers who wish to sponsor foreign nationals under the Skills in Demand Visa must:
  • Be a lawfully operating business in Australia.
  • There should be no adverse information recorded against the business.
  • Nominate a genuine, full-time job position that aligns with an occupation listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) or relevant stream list.
  • Offer a salary that meets the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) and complies with Australian workplace standards.
  • Provide Labour Market Testing (LMT) evidence where required, showing genuine efforts to hire Australian citizens or permanent residents first.
You’ll be able to apply (and get) this visa only if:
  • Your occupation is listed on the relevant Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) or another approved stream list under the Skills in Demand visa.
  • You have been nominated by an approved Australian employer who is seeking to fill a genuine, full-time position.
  • You possess the skills, qualifications, and work experience relevant to the nominated occupation and meet the specific criteria of the stream you’re applying under.
  • You have at least two years of full-time or equivalent part-time work experience in your nominated occupation.
  • You are proficient in vocational English.
  • You meet the character and health requirements set by the Department of Home Affairs.
  • If applying onshore, you must hold a substantive visa or a Bridging visa subclass 010 (Bridging A), 020 (Bridging B), or 030 (Bridging C), and comply with the conditions of your current or previous visa.
  • You must have adequate health insurance arrangements for your stay in Australia

It is noteworthy that TSS (Subclass 482) is being phased out and replaced by the new Skills in Demand Visa since late 2024. Until it’s fully transitioned, TSS Subclass 482 remains the legal framework, while the structure of the Skills in Demand visa applies practically.
