What Is GSM?

The general skilled migration (GSM) visa is a point-based system that has been especially designed to attract highly qualified and experienced professionals to best meet Australia’s skills needs. One of the key elements before one can apply in the GSM program is the skills assessment in the nominated occupation by a relevant assessing authority.

Assessing Authorities For Different Skills

Though the two most common assessing authorities for trade-related occupations are VETASSESS and Trades Recognition Australia (TRA), here’s a list of all the assessing authorities.

• ACS – Australian Computer Society
• ACOPRA – Australian Council of Physiotherapy Regulating Authorities, Inc.
• ADC – Australian Dental Council

• AIQS – Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors
• AIR – Australian Institute of Radiography
• AIWCW – Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers
• AMSA – Australian Maritime Safety Authority
• ANCI – Australian Nursing Council Incorporated
• APC – Australasian Podiatry Council
• APEC – Australian Pharmacy Examining Council Inc

• The applicant(s) must carefully check their conditions and relevant experience before applying for a skills assessment.
• It’s imperative that they provide ample documentation to substantiate their qualifications and relevant work experience.
• It is the responsibility of the applicant to contact the relevant assessing authority for nominated occupation and obtain a Skills Assessment.
• Every assessing authority has its own assessment procedures, timeframes and charges.
• Applicant is strongly advised to contact the relevant assessing authority to arrange skills assessment well before the applicant intends to submit their Expression of Interest in SkillSelect.

Requirements For Skill Assessment

• have been issued an electronic confirmation of enrolment (eCoE) Certificate.
• meet genuine temporary entrant requirement.
• have sufficient funds for airfares, course fees and living costs.
• have adequate English language proficiency.
• meet the health and character requirement.
• have an acceptable Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
• have a valid passport.

Requirements & Eligibility

• Assessing bodies require the applicant to have post-secondary qualifications (such as university or trade) in order to receive a positive assessment of skills.
• Substantial relevant work experience may be acceptable in a smaller number of occupations.
• Each assessing authority advises about the qualification requirements and the occupations it assesses.
• Once the applicant has been invited to apply and lodge a valid application, he/she must provide a scanned certificate copy of a suitable skills assessment by the relevant assessing authority for his/her nominated skilled occupation.

Getting Multiple Skills Assessed

• The applicant can only possess one nominated occupation when lodging Points Tested Skilled Migration application.
• The applicant may apply to any number of skill assessments prior to the submission of EOI.
• Once invited to apply for a Points Tested Skilled Migration visa in the SkillSelect, the applicant can change their designated occupation.
