Planning to travel while your visa application is still processing? You need a Bridging Visa B before you leave Australia. Without it, you may have no visa to come back on.
This guide shows you how to apply online, what it costs, and which mistakes to avoid.
What Is a Bridging Visa B?
A Bridging Visa B (BVB, subclass 020) lets you leave Australia and return during a set travel period. It applies while your main (substantive) visa application is still being decided.
It is the only bridging visa that allows overseas travel. A Bridging Visa A ends the moment you leave the country.
Who Can Apply for a Bridging Visa B?
You can usually apply if you meet these points:
- You are in Australia when you apply.
- You hold a Bridging Visa A (or another eligible bridging visa).
- Your substantive visa application is still being processed.
- You have a strong reason to travel and will return in time.
Home Affairs decides each case. Strong reasons include a family emergency, a funeral, a wedding, a medical need or essential business travel. A holiday alone is harder to justify.
Bridging Visa B Cost in 2026
The Bridging Visa B fee rose sharply on 1 July 2026. Check the Home Affairs pricing page before you pay, as charges can change.
Good to know: The fee is not refunded if your application is refused. Eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens may get a cost concession.
How to Apply for a Bridging Visa B Online (Step by Step)
You apply through your ImmiAccount. Follow these steps.
- Log in to ImmiAccount. Open the application you have lodged and select it from My applications.
- Select “Update us”. Then choose Application for Bridging visa.
- Pick the travel reason. Choose To seek permission to travel outside of Australia and select Next.
- Add all travellers. Include every family member who will travel. Separate applications mean separate fees.
- Update your details. Check your address and complete the health and character declarations.
- Attach evidence. Upload your flight itinerary and documents that explain why you must travel.
- Pay and submit. Pay the application charge and submit. Save your payment confirmation.
If the Application for Bridging visa link does not appear, you may not be eligible to apply online. For example, this can happen if your matter is in judicial review. A paper application may still be possible.
Documents to Support Your Bridging Visa B
Strong evidence helps the case officer understand your need to travel. Prepare these where they apply:
- Flight itinerary showing your departure and return dates
- Letters, invitations or tickets for a wedding, funeral or event
- Medical letters for a health or family emergency
- Employer letter for business travel
- Proof you have ties to Australia, such as a lease or job contract
Use clear, readable files. Describe each document in one simple line when you upload it.
How Long Does a Bridging Visa B Take?
Home Affairs does not publish a standard processing time for this visa. Each case is different.
Apply as early as you can. Do not book non-refundable flights before you have the visa. Never leave Australia until the BVB is granted.
Bridging Visa B Conditions to Check
When your visa is granted, read the notice carefully. Look at these three items:
- Travel period: the dates you can leave and re-enter.
- Return date: you must be back before the travel period ends.
- Work rights: these usually follow your previous bridging visa.
You can also confirm your conditions with a free VEVO check.
Common Bridging Visa B Mistakes
Warning: If you leave without a valid BVB, your bridging visa may cease. You could then be unable to return, and your pending visa application may be affected.
