Contributory Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 884 and 864)

If an older parent’s child is an Australian or eligible New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of Australia, they are allowed to live in the country holding the contributing aged parent visa (subclass 884 and 864).

The contributing aged parent 884 visa is a two-year temporary visa that allows the holders to live in Australia however, you are not allowed to renew or extend this visa.

If you still wish to stay in the country permanently, you can apply for the permanent Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864) before the temporary visa (subclass 884) is expired.

The temporary visa (subclass 884) allows to:

• Live, study and work in the country for two years
• Get health coverage through Medicare – Australia’s public health cover program

The permanent visa (subclass 864) allows to:

• Live, study and work in Australia for as long as you want
• Get health coverage through Medicare – Australia’s public health cover program
• Apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible
• Sponsor eligible family members for permanent residency
• Leave and revisit the country for five years from the date visa is granted

The Temporary 884 visa applicants need to:

• Have a child who is permanently living in Australia as an Australian or eligible New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of Australia
• fulfil the age requirements
• Obtain a sponsor
• fulfil the test for family balance
• fulfil the standards for character and health set by the Australian government

The Permanent 864 visa candidates need to:

• Hold a Temporary visa (subclass 884)
• Respect all requirements for the Temporary visa (subclass 884)
