Temporary Skill Shortage Visa, referred to as the TSS visa (482 Visa), enables employers to address labour shortages by bringing in genuinely skilled workers where they cannot source an appropriately skilled Australian. It facilitates targeted use of overseas workers to address temporary skill shortages while ensuring that Australian workers get priority. If you have the skills to fill a job position with an Australian employer who is looking to recruit you then you may be eligible for the TSS visa. TSS visa holders can work in Australia in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor under one of three streams:
Under the Short-Term Stream, the TSS visa will be approved for two (2) years. It will be approved for a maximum of up to four (4) years in the Medium-Term Stream and Labour Agreement Stream. Please note that according to 482 visa Australia requirements, there is no age restriction/limit for this visa. So anyone with higher skills can apply for a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa in Australia i.e Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Reservoir.
Steps to Apply for a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa
Once your TSS is due to expire, you may re-apply for one further two-year TSS visa (in case of occupations on the STSOL).
On the other hand, for those with occupations on the MLTSSL, the visa holder can renew the TSS visa for a further 4 years, or transition to permanent residency.
Spouses/Partners and children can be included in a TSS visa application as dependent family members. These family members have unrestricted work and study rights or transition to permanent residency.
To get a Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482), you need to find a sponsoring employer, ensure the job is on the Skilled Occupation List, obtain a skills assessment, and meet skill, health and character requirements.
The validity of a TSS visa depends on the stream you have applied for. There are three streams - short-term streams lasting up to 2 years, medium-term streams up to 4 years, and labour agreement streams up to 4 years.
Australian or international businesses can sponsor TSS visa holders, with requirement of approval by Department of Home and Affairs, lawful operation, genuine need for skilled position, and fulfilling sponsorship criteria.
TSS visa holders can apply for another visa by exploring different pathways like Employer Nomination Scheme or Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme. You must ensure that you meet eligibility criteria for the new visa.
TSS visas may require a skills assessment, varying on the occupation and the Department of Home and Affairs requirements, however, it may be optional for certain occupations.
