Temporary Skill Shortage Visa, referred to as the TSS visa (482 Visa), enables employers to address labour shortages by bringing in genuinely skilled workers where they cannot source an appropriately skilled Australian. It facilitates targeted use of overseas workers to address temporary skill shortages while ensuring that Australian workers get priority. If you have the skills to fill a job position with an Australian employer who is looking to recruit you then you may be eligible for the TSS visa. TSS visa holders can work in Australia in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor under one of three streams:

  • Short-Term
  • Medium-Term
  • Labour Agreement

Under the Short-Term Stream, the TSS visa will be approved for two (2) years. It will be approved for a maximum of up to four (4) years in the Medium-Term Stream and Labour Agreement Stream. Please note that according to 482 visa Australia requirements, there is no age restriction/limit for this visa. So anyone with higher skills can apply for a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa in Australia i.e Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Reservoir.

Steps to Apply for a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa

  • Check if your occupation is on the Consolidated Skilled Occupation Lists.
  • Ensure you meet all the eligibility requirements.
  • Find an employer who is willing to sponsor you. Your employer should be willing to complete the employer sponsorship application online through the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
  • Get an employer nomination. Once you find an employer, you will need to have them nominate you for the TSS visa.
  • Apply for the TSS Visa Once the employer nomination application is submitted, you can apply for the 457 visa online through the DHA.
  • Wait for a decision. It can take several months for the DHA to make a decision on your visa application.
  • Receive your visa and start working!Once your application is approved, you will receive your visa and can start work in Australia.

Cost And Processing Time (482 Visa Fees)

  • Short-term stream of 482 Visa costs from AUD1,265 and may take anywhere from 35 to 60 days for processing.
  • Medium-term stream costs from AUD2,645 and may take anywhere from 30 to 60 days for processing.
  • Labour agreement stream costs from AUD2,645 and may take anywhere from 30 to 90 days for processing.

Visa Extension

Once your TSS is due to expire, you may re-apply for one further two-year TSS visa (in case of occupations on the STSOL).

On the other hand, for those with occupations on the MLTSSL, the visa holder can renew the TSS visa for a further 4 years, or transition to permanent residency.

Inclusion of Family Members

Spouses/Partners and children can be included in a TSS visa application as dependent family members. These family members have unrestricted work and study rights or transition to permanent residency.

Employers who sponsor foreign nationals to work in Australia on the TSS visa are required to:
  • Be a lawfully operating business
  • Have no adverse information against the business
  • Nominate a job position for the foreign national worker that is full-time and genuine
  • Satisfy salary and employment condition related requirements
  • Provide evidence of Labour Market Testing, if required
You’ll be able to apply (and get) this visa only if:
  • You have an occupation on the Consolidated Skilled Occupations list
  • You have been nominated for a job position by an Australian employer that wants to recruit you to work for them
  • You have the relevant skills and qualifications for your occupation
  • You meet the requirements of the stream in which you apply
  • You have at least two (2) years of work experience in your occupation
  • You have vocational English language ability
  • You can satisfy DHA requirements for good character and health
  • You are in Australia and hold a substantive visa, a subclass 010 (Bridging A) visa, a subclass 020 (Bridging B) visa or a Subclass 030 (Bridging C) visa
  • You have substantially complied with any conditions that apply or applied to your last visa
  • You have arranged to have health insurance during your stay in Australia
