Temporary Graduate visa subclass 485 has two streams:


This stream is available to international students with an eligible qualification who graduate with skills and qualifications that relate to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). A visa in this stream is granted for 18 months from the date of grant.

Visa applicants who completed trade qualification in Australia and are working in their nominated occupation can proceed with TRA – Job Ready Program to obtain a full skill assessment during 18 months.

Other Graduates can either complete a Professional year or gain relevant one year of work experience to apply for skill assessment with relevant authority.


For international students who graduate with a higher education degree from an Australian education provider, regardless of their field of study. A visa in this stream can be granted for up to four years from the date the visa is granted, depending on the visa applicant’s qualification.

  • 2 years: completion of Bachelor Degree, Bachelor with Honours,Masters by Coursework or Masters (Extended)
  • 3 years: Masters by Research
  • 4 years: Doctorate


  • Age: The main applicant must be under 50 at the date of lodgement.
  • English: The main applicant must demonstrate their English language ability, either through holding certain types of passport or by undertaking an English test. All Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa applicants must sit an English test and score 6.0 (or equivalent) in all four parts of the test, not less than 5.0 bands in each module.
  • Study in Australia: You must meet the 2 years study requirement and have completed qualifications within six months of applying for the visa. The primary applicant must be in Australia when they make their application for a 485 visa, and must have held an eligible student visa within the 6 months period prior to lodgement.
